Identifying as a member or supporter of ZAPU became a death wish.
Under the then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, a caveat was promulgated, outlawing ZAPU and forfeiting all its properties to the state. Some of the properties belonged to ZPRA, the armed wing of ZAPU during the liberation struggle. Being visionaries, ZPRA veterans lawfully purchased a string of valuable properties using funds pooled from their demobilization payouts. The party, ZAPU also invested in movable and immovable properties. Everything was seized and forfeited to the state. Dr Joshua Nkomo was persecuted and hounded into exile. His lieutenants, the late Dr Dumiso Dabengwa and the late Commander Lookout Masuku were thrown into Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on trumped up charges. The rest is history as the adage goes.
Just like in East Germany in 1990, it has been four decades of denial and deafening silence.
As the watershed elections of August 2023 were rigged to maintain the status quo, hopes of a new Zimbabwe remain an elusive dream. ZAPU the corporate victim of Gukurahundi, remains incapacitated. With Mugabe’s caveat frozen in time, the resurging party is struggling to reclaim its purloined glory. As fate would have it, the leader of ZAPU today is none other than Michael Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the very son of the late Dr Joshua Nkomo. One would consider it a golden opportunity for poetic justice but lo and behold, those wielding the levers of power have no desire to allow a new dawn for Zimbabwe. Due to incapacitation, ZAPU could not field its leader for the presidential race. The steep nomination fees demanded by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission made it impossible for ZAPU to effectively participate in the crucial plebiscite.

Apart from the continued onslaught against ZAPU there remains a myriad of unwritten caveats designed to perpetuate Gukurahundi in other subtle and thinly veiled forms. Nothing short of regime change can revive hopes for the genuine resolution of Gukurahundi as a de facto genocide.
Whoever emerges as the elected leader of Zimbabwe after unseating ZANU PF, should know that there can never be genuine national healing and cohesion without first addressing the issue of Gukurahundi.
That is the elephant in the room. It can never be wished away. Once the issue is properly resolved then devolution of power should be the next logical step. Our country will know a new birth of freedom. Only then can spaghetti roads and skyscrapers mean something for everyone

This brigade was directly under Mugabe's control and not part of the regular Zimbabwe National Army command structure, allowing for direct orders from Mugabe to be carried out without interference. The brigade was largely composed of ex-ZANLA (Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, the armed wing of ZANU-PF) fighters, which were predominantly Shona.
Political and Military Strategy: Mugabe's government used the Fifth Brigade to conduct a campaign of terror in Matabeleland and parts of the Midlands, areas where ZAPU (Zimbabwe African People's Union) had strong support. Intelligence and Security Measures: Emmerson Mnangagwa, as Minister of State for National Security at the time, played a significant role in the intelligence and security aspects of Gukurahundi. His ministry was involved in identifying and targeting ZAPU members and sympathizers, often using brutal methods to gather information or eliminate opposition.

Political Rivalry: Despite being allies during the liberation struggle against white minority rule, ZANU-PF and ZAPU had significant ideological and strategic differences, compounded by ethnic tensions between the Shona-dominated ZANU-PF and the Ndebele-dominated ZAPU. After independence, these tensions escalated into open conflict when Mugabe accused ZAPU leader Joshua Nkomo of plotting a coup, leading to Nkomo's dismissal from the government in 1982.
Elimination of Opposition: The aim was to dismantle ZAPU's political and military influence. The Gukurahundi campaign resulted in the deaths of thousands, with estimates around 20,000, and was later described by Mugabe himself as a "moment of madness." However, it effectively led to the 1987 Unity Accord, where ZAPU was absorbed into ZANU-PF, creating a de facto one-party state under Mugabe's leadership. This move was strategic in silencing opposition and centralizing power but left a legacy of trauma, ethnic division, and unresolved justice issues in Zimbabwe.
Emmerson Mnangagwa's role in the Gukurahundi campaign is a subject of significant debate, controversy, and analysis:
Position and Influence:
State Security Minister: At the time of the Gukurahundi massacres, from 1980 to 1988, Mnangagwa served as Zimbabwe's Minister of State Security, overseeing the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO). This position placed him at the heart of the government's security apparatus, which was crucial in the execution of Gukurahundi.
Involvement in Gukurahundi:
Intelligence Gathering: Mnangagwa's role involved intelligence operations, where the CIO was accused of providing lists of ZAPU operatives and supporters to the Fifth Brigade and other military units involved in the campaign. This intelligence was used to target individuals for arrest, torture, or execution.
Public Statements: Mnangagwa made several public speeches during this period that are seen as inflammatory or inciting violence. For instance, at a rally in Victoria Falls in 1983, he likened dissidents to "cockroaches and bugs" that needed to be eradicated, drawing parallels with the rhetoric used in other genocides. From ZAPU's perspective, Gukurahundi was a deliberate, state-sponsored campaign of genocide and political suppression by ZANU-PF, under Robert Mugabe's leadership, aimed at annihilating ZAPU politically and physically decimating its support base, particularly among the Ndebele ethnic group in Matabeleland and parts of the Midlands. CHIEFS' SELFISH DEMANDS A SHAMEFUL BETRAYAL OF VICTIMS

The Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) is appalled by the reported demands made by traditional chiefs involved in the Gukurahundi outreach programme. The chiefs' insatiable greed and self-aggrandizement are a stark reminder of the total disregard for the victims of the Gukurahundi genocide.
As ZAPU, we knew from the beginning that this process was flawed and a bastardization of the genuine attempts to heal the wounds of the past. The chiefs' demands for hefty allowances, Starlink kits, and fuel coupons are a clear indication that they are more interested in lining their pockets than in providing justice and closure to the victims and their families.
The secrecy surrounding the hearings, which are being held in selected parts of Matabeleland away from the public and the media, raises serious questions about the government's intentions. The exclusion of Midlands Province, which also suffered during the Gukurahundi massacres, is a blatant attempt to downplay the magnitude of the genocide and deny the victims their rightful place in the narrative.
ZAPU demands that the government takes immediate action to address the concerns raised by the victims and their families. We call for a more transparent and inclusive process to address the country's dark past, one that prioritizes justice, accountability, and reparations for the victims spread across Zimbabwe and abroad.
To the chiefs involved in this sham process, we say: your greed and insensitivity are a betrayal of the trust placed in you by the people. You are a shame to the traditional leadership institution and a stain on the dignity of our culture.
