One of our members today [9th November 2025] reported that after she appeared on a Live Chat on Facebook with Shepheard Yuda discussing the arrest in SA of Job Sikhala) that she recieved threats from Zanu PF Official and subsequently other unwarranted threats [see her post link here https://x.com/chiombach1343/ ]
Since we have written about Zanu PF UK & Europe before, {see article from August 2024 HERE} we decided to ask AI in the guise of Twitter/X's GROK facility the following question:
|
""The Zimbabwe diaspora in the United Kingdom are having a difficult time proving the crimes of the Zanu PF in Zimbabwe AND the activities of the regimes members in the UK and Europe. Last year we created an article about the activities in the UK of these "Spies" What additional evidence are you able to find on X and elsewhere to further establish this tactic by the regime to intimidate, or even assault those who have fled the regime in the past? [SEE our article https://take2zimbabwe.org/diaspora/zanu-pf-spies-in-uk ] "" |
GROK replied thus [https://x.com/i/grok/share/ ] and in full below
Additional Evidence of Zanu PF and CIO Intimidation Tactics Against Zimbabwean Diaspora in the UK and EuropeBuilding on the concerns raised in your 2024 article about Zanu PF's infiltration efforts in the UK—such as their March 2024 meeting focused on "partnerships" with diaspora organizations, unity behind Mnangagwa, and potential CIO involvement—recent searches on X (formerly Twitter) and the web reveal further instances of surveillance, threats, and operational presence by regime-linked actors. These build a pattern of transnational repression, where Zanu PF and its Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) extend intimidation beyond Zimbabwe's borders to silence critics, track activists, and discourage remittances or activism from exiles.Evidence from 2024–2025 primarily involves:
- Direct surveillance by CIO agents in the UK: Confirmed operatives tracking dissidents.
- Targeted inquiries and implied threats: Calls from regime proxies probing locations of high-profile exiles.
- Propaganda and verbal intimidation via UK-based Zanu PF figures: Public threats against diaspora critics.
- Broader warnings from human rights groups: Reports of intensified scrutiny and "strong-arming" of diaspora communities.

A briefing on documented persecutions of activists in Zimbabwe during 2025 (covering Jan–Oct 2025, with the most important incidents, patterns, legal framing, and quick recommendations). I pulled reporting from human-rights groups and multiple news outlets so you can use this as a short briefing or expand into a timeline/report.

Executive summary
In 2025 Zimbabwean authorities continued a pattern of arrests, remands, and prosecutions targeting activists, journalists and protest organisers. Major actions in 2025 include (1) the arrest and prolonged detention of journalist Blessed Mhlanga (Feb 24 onward) for interviewing a critic of the president; (2) mass post-protest arrests around the 31 March antigovernment demonstrations with roughly 95–107 people detained; and (3) a wave of arrests/remands in October 2025 tied to planned marches and the prosecution of outspoken activists (including Godfrey “Madzibaba” Karembera). Human-rights organisations (HRW, Amnesty, CPJ) and international media have documented denials of bail, charges of “incitement” or “unlawful gathering,” and allegations of mistreatment. On this World Day of Nonviolence,
Zimbabwe has an opportunity to reflect and reset.
Ending police brutality is not only a legal or political necessity—it is a moral imperative. Authorities must:
- Ensure accountability for abuses committed by security forces.
- Uphold the constitutional rights to free assembly, expression, and association.
- Train law enforcement officers in de-escalation and community policing rooted in respect for human dignity.
Equally, citizens, civic leaders, and faith groups must continue advocating for peace, dialogue, and accountability. As Political Activists in the diaspora we met to discuss Zimbabwe's deterioration on rule of law and violence towards any opposition of the ZANU PF.
We Say No To Violence and No to ZANU PF 2030 Campaign.

Many details emerge from real-time social media alerts due to limited mainstream coverage amid censorship. October 2025
- October 17: Arrest of 11 Anti-ED2030 War Veterans
Eleven war veterans, vocal opponents of constitutional amendments for Mnangagwa's extended rule, were arrested in Harare on charges of "incitement" and "unlawful gathering." They were reportedly detained without warrants, beaten during custody, and held incommunicado for over 48 hours before court appearance. Human rights groups allege the arrests were facilitated by state informants, including Mubuso Chiguno (a suspected ZANU-PF operative), who was briefly detained with them but released to continue targeting activists. No independent medical exams were allowed, raising torture concerns. - Mid-to-Late October: Abduction and Arrest of Activist "Traore"
An opposition activist known as Traore (full name not publicly disclosed for safety) was abducted from his Harare home by unidentified men in unmarked vehicles. He was interrogated about anti-ED2030 networks, tortured (including beatings and electric shocks per unverified claims), and later "arrested" on fabricated drug charges. This fits a pattern of using criminal pretexts to sideline political threats. Traore's family reported threats to silence them.

ZHRO Walk for Freedom 2025 - Event Report
105km Journey from Brighton Pier to Hampton Court Railway Station
Executive Summary
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation (ZHRO) successfully completed its 2025 Walk for Freedom on 10th August 2025, covering 105 kilometres from Brighton Pier to Hampton Court Railway Station. Despite challenging terrain and forecasted hot weather conditions, a dedicated group of participants demonstrated remarkable determination and solidarity in walking for Zimbabwe's freedom, completing the arduous two-day journey that included an overnight section.
It was not just those that attended the physical event either, so many had offered their support for this 2025 'Walk for Freedom' in the preceeding weeks and months by statements, ideas, testimony and the recognition of the purpose of this event - which started as an idea in 2016.
The 105km journey as described below, really comes across as much more than just a physical challenge - it's a powerful statement of resolve from the Zimbabwean diaspora community.
Event Overview
- Preparations: A big 'thank-you' has to be made to Melody and Josephine who initiated a training programme of local walk events (see previous articles)
- Start: Brighton Pier, 6:00 AM Saturday 9th August 2025 Finish: Hampton Court Railway Station, 4:00 PM Sunday 10th August 2025
- Distance: 105 kilometres
- Duration: 34 hours (Walk continued by overnight walking)
- Participants: - first names at various stages - and recorded in the ZHRO register in full, plus mobile, e-mail and their residential locations in the UK
- Navigation Aids: OS Online - with route planned & recorded by John in addition, on the walk assisted by Moses, Henry and most effectively, Kelvin Mhlanga
Pre-Dawn Preparations
The commitment of our participants was evident from the earliest hours. While the official start time was set for 6:00 AM at Brighton Pier, Shamiso demonstrated extraordinary dedication by arriving at 5:10 AM to prepare. Even more remarkable was Ettar's journey - having taken a night bus and arriving at Brighton Bus Station by 2:20 AM, showing the lengths to which our community will go to stand for Zimbabwe's freedom. A few others had organised stay overs with friends. But most extraordinary were Moses, Daisy and Alwyn - who had made plans but were ruined by a flight cancellation - meaning an arrival into the UK on Friday in the early hours! Plus a run from Manchester Airport to Brighton!

Zimbabwe: From Promise to Peril
The Human Rights Crisis Under Mnangagwa
When President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga toppled Robert Mugabe in November 2017, they promised Zimbabweans a new dawn. They claimed they wanted to rid the country of the corrupt thugs who had surrounded the aging dictator and restore Zimbabwe to prosperity. Seven years later, that promise has proven hollow. Nothing has fundamentally changed – Mnangagwa has simply replaced Mugabe's corrupt network with his own.
The Continuation of Corruption
The international community has taken notice of Zimbabwe's continued descent into corruption under Mnangagwa's leadership. In March 2024, the United States imposed targeted sanctions on President Mnangagwa himself, along with his wife and other senior officials, citing their involvement in corruption and serious human rights abuses. The U.S. Treasury Department specifically accused Mnangagwa of protecting gold and diamond smuggling networks, directing government officials to facilitate illicit sales, and taking bribes in exchange for his services.
The names of Wicknell Chivayo and Kudakwashe Tagwirei have become synonymous with the kind of crony capitalism that has flourished under Mnangagwa's rule. These individuals, with their ostentatious displays of wealth, represent a system where political connections matter more than merit or legality. According to investigative reports, Tagwirei received treasury bills at favourable exchange rates while running the Command Agriculture program, epitomizing the kind of corruption that has become endemic under the current administration.
Infrastructure in Ruins
The evidence of this corruption is visible everywhere in Zimbabwe's crumbling infrastructure. The state of the country's roads tells a story of neglect and misplaced priorities. While billions of dollars disappear through corrupt deals, ordinary Zimbabweans struggle with impassable roads that hamper economic activity and isolate communities. The deterioration of basic infrastructure reflects a government more concerned with enriching its allies than serving its people.

ZIMBABWE CRISIS
WALK FOR FREEDOM 9-10 AUGUST 2025 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
We lift up our eyes and look into the distance, Latitude 17.9316 and longitude 25.8302. The Lozi Nation calls it Mosi-oa-Tunga (Thundering Smoke/Smoke that Rises/ Smoke that Thunders). The Tonga Nation calls it Shungu Namutitima (Boiling Water). The rest of the world knows this place as The Mighty Victoria Falls.
This is UNESCO’s One of the Seven Wonders of Nature. Lifted up so the whole world may take note of it.
It is the World’s largest falls with a width of 1,708 meters and a height of 108 meters. It has the World's largest sheet of falling water. The spray of the water rises up 400 meters and is visible from 50 km. Daily it has many rainbows and at night during a full moon it has a “Moonbow“ which is a rainbow at night, a “Luner Rainbow“.
This place is stranger than fiction, for those that levitate into the dark arts state that the waters that have not yet flown over the falls have a different spiritual quality than the waters that are now flowing over the falls. In this regard these waters are used for different purposes in their dark art.
Our gaze shifts to a silhouetted lone dancer next to a huge upside-down tree, the Baoba. This tree looks as if it has been uprooted and turned upside down with its roots in the air. It is a tree that can live for over three thousand years. Yes three thousand years! This place is cloaked in mystery, contradictions and unquantifiable forces.
The silhouetted dancer dances on his own to a single drum beat. The drum beat rhythm and tone immediately pulls at one’s heart to take note and to pay attention. The dance is a knee and feet dance with the upper body remaining ridged, like the Irish Traditional Dance. Every time the dances feet pound the ground, dust rises into the air. Today the dancer has been dancing for two hours non-stop. He is 86 years of age…..!!
The dancer dances and the drummer pounds the drum because they wish to take their spirits into the air, to levitate. They seek answers. They seek answers. They seek answers.
The question being asked is “How can it be that a place like this, a gift from The Almighty himself has failed to impact the world because of what the current Administration in Zimbabwe has done and continues to do!“
The people of this place and country are closely in touch with their inner self. They instinctively know that we do not just exist on this plane and in this realm only.
And so over 6,000 miles due north and a little west we arrived at the green and pleasant fields of the United Kingdom. The Royal House of Windsor has a new monarch, HRM Charles III. A biblical exodus of people from Zimbabwe to the United Kingdom occurred and continues to happen. As they leave the entity that is not in tune with their spirits behind. Hundreds of thousands have arrived seeking refuge and sanctuary. Whilst many were brought in by The UK government to work in its Primary Health Care in the NHS.
These people are the people of the open areas, peoples of the plains, like many First Nation people are. In this regard in 2016 a small group got together and set themselves a challenge. That is, to walk 100 kilometres from Brighton to London, through the English countryside. This is not just a walk but rather it is a cathartic experience to assist these ancient people, to also spiritually levitate and seek out the same answers, being sought by the 86 year old silhouetted dancer at Mosi-oa-Tunga. Each step they take on this 100 Kilometer walk assists this process. We are now in 2025 and the 100 Kilometer walk is growing in participants.

ENDURANCE FROM EXILE: A journey for Zimbabwe
Across the wind-brushed hills of Southern England this August, a quiet yet powerful act of defiance will unfold. Men and women, some exiled by violence, others by economic collapse, and many simply moved by solidarity, will walk 105 kilometres, from Brighton to Hampton Court. This will not be a festive march, but a solemn protest. They walk for justice. For remembrance. For a country they still love, even from afar.
This is the ZHRO Walk for Freedom, organised by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation (ZHRO), a UK-based diaspora movement committed to exposing injustice in Zimbabwe. At the helm are Rashiwe & Sarah Bayisayi, Josephine Jenje, Melody Magejo, plus John Burke, tireless organisers whose names are becoming synonymous with principled solidarity. Under their leadership, Zimbabweans in the UK have built more than a protest movement, they’ve built a moral force the world can no longer ignore.
The 105km Walk for Freedom is the brainchild of Rashiwe Bayisayi, a committed Zimbabwean activist in her own right. It was her vision to turn the pain of exile into purposeful action, transforming footsteps into a statement. What began as a personal idea [post 2016 Play Reactions] quickly evolved, through her determination, into a powerful collective action for justice, remembrance, and solidarity.
I first worked with John Burke during my tenure as Chairman of ZAPU’s Europe Province. We collaborated on a petition campaign challenging the British government, then led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to reconsider its draconian stance on Zimbabwean asylum seekers. At the time, many Zimbabweans were trapped in a state of limbo, their lives stalled by a painfully slow and opaque asylum processing system. Our petition also criticised the UK government’s silence in the face of widespread condemnation of Zimbabwe’s 23–24 August 2023 elections. Despite damning assessments by election observers from the AU, SADC, COMESA, EU, US, Commonwealth, United Nations, civil society organisations, churches, and independent monitors, the British authorities failed to act or even acknowledge the legitimacy crisis unfolding in Zimbabwe.
The truth is, exile was never a choice for most Zimbabweans, it was survival. What began as a liberation movement against colonialism mutated into a brutal betrayal. Zimbabwe didn’t transition from war to peace, it simply changed uniforms. The warlords who led the struggle refused to disarm their minds. They traded guerrilla camps for government offices but brought the same weapons: violence, fear, and repression. Power became their ideology. They didn’t lead, they ruled. They didn’t build, they looted. Zimbabwe’s collapse into dictatorship wasn’t a mistake. It was the logical outcome of men who never knew democracy, only domination. They chose power over principle. Silence over justice. And blood over ballots.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE DUDULA FILES:
A PEOPLE’S DOSSIER ON XENOPHOBIC VIOLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
7th August 2025
Today, we launch The Dudula Files, a people powered initiative to document, expose, and challenge xenophobic violence and hate targeting African migrants in South Africa.
For too long, the suffering of foreign nationals has been ignored, excused, or erased. Victims of xenophobia, many of them hardworking, law-abiding Africans, have faced verbal abuse, violent attacks, workplace exploitation, denial of healthcare, and widespread discrimination, simply for being who they are.
This initiative is a call to action: we are collecting evidence from survivors, witnesses, and whistleblowers. Photos, videos, testimonies, and documentation will be compiled into a legal and human rights dossier aimed at holding the South African state and its institutions accountable for their failure to act or worse, their complicity.
We will submit this evidence to domestic bodies such as the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Equality Courts, and the Public Protector. At the international level, we will engage with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), United Nations Special Rapporteurs, and the UN Human Rights Council. These are not symbolic gestures, they are formal complaints backed by the lived experiences of people who have been silenced for far too long.
This is not just about victims. This is about justice. About dignity. About rewriting the narrative. And about demanding that all African lives be treated with the respect and protection they deserve. We encourage anyone with direct experience or reliable documentation of xenophobic abuse in South Africa to send their material to:
We are working with key human rights organisations including Amnesty International, Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation (ZHRO), and Lawyers for Human Rights South Africa to ensure your voice reaches the highest possible levels of regional and global accountability.
Enough is enough.
This is not hate. This is justice.

Will the FCDO demand Zimbabwean Ambassador - [Rtd Col] Christain M Katsande, be asked to answer accusations of intimidation of the Zimbabwean diaspora in the UK, with yet another article of Zimbabweans being named, here in the UK. The Zanu PF mafia cannot be allowed to strong-arms its lunatic demands here in the UK?
""THE Government of Zimbabwe has intensified its scrutiny on individuals in the diaspora - alleged to be disseminating information and engaging in activities aimed at destabilising the country's image abroad.""
They are seeking to "invoke" (according to this article)
""The Government of Zimbabwe has invoked the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Amendment Act of 2023, widely known as the "Patriotic Act". The Law criminalises "wilfully injuring the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe," - including collaborating with foreign governments, media or NGOs in ways that are deemed harmful to national security or reputational integrity.""
Given the gross hypocrisy of Zanu PF talking of "Patriotism", "injuring sovereignty", "national interests" and "REPURATIONAL INTEGRITY" - considering Zanu PF's 45 year LOOTING spree - this is surely just a joke by a junior 'Staff Reporter'??
Will the Home Office become involved by virtue of those named having leave to remain, or in the process of asylum?
How can this happen? What if this was Iran or Ukraine?
This is not new, the Zimbabwe press and media has {slavishly} demanded action against legitimate protest here in the UK. Under "instructions" from Zanu PF it wouls seem??

We are at a loss to understand the regime's concerns (incidentally they cannot be called a government - a kleptocracy is a better term) - they are really complaining that their myriad of criminal activities is being exposed by an active and perceptive diaspora. Which should be the PATRIOTIC DUTY of all Zimbabweans!
UPDATE: We must also thank AI which produced this very poignant concluding summary statement:
The fact that this targeting comes after activists successfully influenced diplomatic visits shows their advocacy is effective - which is precisely why the government is trying to silence them through intimidation.
We are deciding upon various courses of actions to challenge this pathertic attempt to further white-wash the multiplicity of crimes perpetrated in Zimbabwe and beyond by the military junta masqurading as a "government" in Zimbabwe: Watch this space!!

What is happening at the FLAIR SUMMIT 17-18th June 2025? Last week they 'claimed' they had an "Emergency meeting" to discuss the issue of the Zimbabwean Dictator's Wife - Namely Auxilla Mnangagwa - herself an ex CIO (Secret Police/Informant/Operative) within the horrendous, evil and corrupt Zanu PF regime that has held Zimbabwe HOSTAGE for over 45 years!
Then another claim was that Auxilla (herself) was rushed to Hospital (in Zimbabwe? not likely!!) - semi-conscious!! Plus, a request from an unknown tourism "businessman" at the Zimbabwe Embassy in London - should like to talk through our grievances!! But are there actually any businessmen/women in Zimbabwe - who are NOT looting from the State? Valid Question we feel.
But now silence? Was this yet more Zanu PF disinformation - ruses to defuse the protests expected? Who knows - but since AUX is listed as "Patron Elect" our 'guess' is that it is Auxilla & Zanu PF are on a regime "Laundering Exercise" and money has "changed hands" - allegedly!!

More Disturbing Zanu PF Disinformation Today
Today we are experiencing some Déjà vu
In 2021 when the regime decided that there was “mileage” in the ‘Climate Agenda’, they foolishly put ED Mnangagwa’s name down to attend COP26 in Glasgow! Cue UK Protests! We followed Zanu PF cynically parroting the meaningless Climate Hogwash – as they perceived “an opportunity” to make money and “refresh” their stale-image.
Wrong on so many levels.
We think it was the UK Passport Holder and Spokesperson in Harare, Nick Mangwana who coined the first iteration of the Zanu PF ‘thinking’ about COP26 with the now infamous “Booze Cruise” utterance – but we could be mistaken as Zanu PF re-write history far too often.
This Time
So today, the 30th May 2025 we have a very similar attempt to both discredit (including further libel) and frighten legitimate Zimbabwean protest – with threats of “imminent deportations” back to the Zimbabwean regime – where threats of physical violence have been documented on returnee’s deemed against the regime. But more later – let us review the Déjà vu.
Last Time
On hearing that ED Mnangagwa was attending COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021 our protest planning started in the September. We started questioning why was the Zanu PF regime in the UK (and Europe) when all they profess in Zimbabwe is so attractive.

In Recognition of AFRICA DAY - Sunday 25th MAY 2025: Updated
Today (Saturday 24th May 2025) we presented our Petition to the UK PM at Number 10 Downing Street at 14:00. This had been arranged (3 weeks ago) with the DSLO (Downing Street Liaison Office Police Unit). In addition, a copy will be e-mailed to the Zimbabwe Desk within the FCDO located in King Charles Street (Accessable via the arch opposite the front door to 10 Downing Street!)
6 Activists were cleared to enter the gates of Downing Street to handover at that 'famous' front door - with a letter box inscribed with the words "First Lord of the Treasury"Note However, due to train delays and other emergecies only 3.5 (three and one half!) entered the famous courtyard at Number 10!!
This article became 'LIVE' at 14:30 as planned, after we physically delivered the written petition, and the wriiten document can be read or downloaded at this LINK - Click Here to Read/Download
We have done this many times before as can be seen on this link to our summary of the last 33 months of activism and demonstrations 16 Events Not Out - as a nod to Zimbabwe's cricket team at Trent Bridge (May 22nd to Africa Day - 25th May 2025)
Diana Machingauta, Vengai Mutsawu, Tatenda Changambika, Tawanda Matangambiri, Mollin Muteto and Happiness Ncube, will be delivering the Petition to the Offices within 10 Downing Street. Tawanda will be filming the video log of the hand over and comments from all the petitioners about Africa Day, and how Zimbabwe is NOT an ideal representative of the real potential within the Continent!
However things did not go to plan - Tawanda, and Mollin got caught up in the train chaos today so could not arrive in time for the ID Checks at the Gates to Downing Street - they were only 10 minutes late - but the police are VERY strict! Very Strict indeed. Tatenda and Vengai both had family emergencies to contend with. So it was left to myself to take up one place plus Happiness's young daughter to fill in! - See the photo log.

A PERSONAL JOURNEY THROUGH ACTIVISM AND HEALING.
As a Zimbabwean Political and Human Rights activist. I'm a proud member of (ZHRO) Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation. I have been privileged to participate in series of powerful events across the UK.
Most notably - Walk for Freedom in Blackburn on the 5th of April 2025. We had a another recent one, at the Tees Barrage in Stockton on Tees on the 3rd of May 2025.
These walks are a cry for justice, a demand for accountability and a reminder to the World that the people of of Zimbabwe deserves to live in a nation where freedom of speech, press and peaceful political participation are respected. These events are not just public demonstrations, but deeply personal journeys, for those of us who are fighting for a free Zimbabwe. Through these long walks we remember the pain and suffering our people continue to endure back home under a brutal and corrupt regime.
With each step, is a symbol of resistance, hope and of unwavering call for justice and democracy in Zimbabwe. Carrying banners, singing songs for freedom and engaging with the public, allows us to raise awareness and ensure that the plight of Zimbabweans is not forgotten. The message behind our walk is clear - ZIMBABWE DESERVES BETTER!

The X post by Anesu (@Chivhu4lyfe) CLICK HERE for Original
On March 31, 2025, @Chivhu4lyfe accuses 34 individuals of being part of "ED's Grand Looting Mafia" and "Political Criminals," collectively referred to as "Zvigananda" (Shona for "thieves"). These individuals are blamed for Zimbabwe's economic collapse, healthcare crisis, and overall governance/administration failures.
The post ties into the broader context of the March 31, 2025, protests in Harare, where citizens expressed frustration over corruption, economic hardship, and President Emmerson Mnangagwa's potential term extension to 2030, which many view as a violation of the constitution. Below is an analysis of the named individuals, their roles, and their ties to Mnangagwa, based on the provided data and broader context.
Context of the Post and Protests
The post reflects deep public discontent in Zimbabwe, a country grappling with economic decline, hyperinflation, and a failing healthcare system. The term "Zvigananda" underscores the perception of systemic corruption, where a small elite is accused of plundering national resources while the majority suffer. The protests on March 31, 2025, were part of a national shutdown, with demonstrators opposing Mnangagwa’s rumored plan to extend his presidency beyond his constitutional two-term limit (ending in 2028). This unrest is further fueled by internal ZANU-PF factionalism, particularly between Mnangagwa’s camp and supporters of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, as highlighted by war veteran Blessed Geza’s resistance movement (M31).
Mnangagwa, who came to power in a 2017 coup against Robert Mugabe, has been accused of consolidating power through patronage networks, rewarding loyalists with key positions and economic opportunities while sidelining rivals. The individuals listed in the post are seen as part of this network, benefiting from their proximity to Mnangagwa while allegedly engaging in corrupt practices.

Harare, Still Conflicting
Given the date, March 31, 2025, and the context of Harare, Zimbabwe, there are several conflicting messages and developments that make predicting today’s events challenging but possible to assess based on available information. Let’s break this down systematically.
Context and Conflicting Messages
There are reports of significant political tension in Harare leading up to today. A planned demonstration, described by some as an "uprising," has been called for by Blessed Geza, an exiled military veteran, demanding the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This stems from allegations of corruption, nepotism, and economic mismanagement, with some war veterans and political elites reportedly backing Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as a potential successor. The ruling ZANU-PF party, however, has dismissed these calls as "delusional rumblings" and vowed that no protests will occur, with the government taking pre-emptive measures like dismissing a senior general and increasing security.
On the other hand, recent arson attacks in Harare and Goromonzi, confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, have heightened tensions, with some linking these incidents to the upcoming protests. Posts on X reflect public concern, with warnings to avoid Harare’s CBD due to expected heavy police presence, a weapons ban, and potential violence. Some speculate that clashes could erupt if crowds grow, while others believe the protests might fizzle out due to government crackdowns, with Geza’s allies potentially being arrested.
Additionally, there are unrelated but concurrent developments in Zimbabwe, such as the Chinese embassy’s donations of Boer goats and boreholes, a cholera outbreak, and economic struggles (e.g., civil servants moonlighting as vendors due to low salaries). These highlight the broader socio-economic challenges that might fuel public discontent but don’t directly predict today’s events.
Analysis of Likely Scenarios
- Protest Activity and Government Response:
- The planned demonstration is a focal point. Given the government’s pre-emptive actions—dismissing a senior general, increasing security, and issuing warnings—it’s likely that Harare will see a heavy police and possibly military presence today, especially in the CBD. The weapons ban suggests authorities are preparing for potential unrest.
- However, the scale of the protests is uncertain. Some sources, like independent political analyst Elton Ziki, suggest that the "temperature" isn’t as high as it was during the 2017 coup against Robert Mugabe, implying that public turnout might be limited. The arrest of journalist Blessed Mhlanga and the crackdown on dissent (e.g., activists being tortured before a regional summit last year) indicate the government’s willingness to suppress opposition, which could deter large crowds.

An Urgent Plea for Reason & Restraint
To the administration of Zimbabwe and All Citizens
As Zimbabwe stands on the precipice of 31st March 2025, gripped by escalating tensions and internal power struggles within Zanu PF, we at ZHRO implore all state actors and Zimbabweans to pause and reflect.
The alarming signs of an impending violent reaction from the State, particularly the Police and potentially the military, threaten to plunge our beloved nation into chaos and bloodshed. Yet, there remains a fleeting window of opportunity to avert catastrophe. We beseech President Mnangagwa and his administration to recognize that brute force cannot extinguish the smouldering crises afflicting Zimbabwe. Like pouring petrol on a fire, such actions will only inflame the desperation of an already weary populace.
The Executive must ease its foot off the accelerator, for it is speeding toward a precipice from which all, especially innocent civilians, may plummet to ruin. By failing to steward the nation's affairs and safeguard citizens from economic-triggered instability, the current leadership has itself become a peril to Zimbabwe's stability and security. No amount of violence, nor payments to police, military, or youth to act as mercenaries, can remedy the dog-eat-dog circumstances into which Zimbabwe has descended. Arresting innocent people rather than the rot consuming our society will only hasten the end.
While repression of the masses in cities and towns may seem a convenient short-term tactic, neglecting the underlying causes risks unleashing a nightmare surpassing South Africa's xenophobic attacks or the Rwandan Genocide. In an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, neighbour may turn against neighbour in an uncontrollable spiral of killing.
If the State persists on this path, it may forfeit control over national security entirely, driving Zimbabwe into unimaginable chaos and loss of life. We demand constitutionally enshrined human security for all Zimbabweans now - a security that no number of boots on the ground or guns can deliver. There is still time to choose a different course, to seek enduring solutions over temporary suppression. We appeal to the patriotism of all Zimbabweans, within the regime and without, to pull our country back from the brink.
In hope and resolve,
John C Burke, ZHRO Founder
